The first fully-electric Ferrari will arrive in 2025
Ferrari Chairman John Elkann made a shock announcement at the company’s annual general meeting when he confirmed that a battery-electric Maranello-made machine will be launched within five years.
No more details were revealed but the news is a significant U-turn for a company which not long ago said it would never go all-electric. In 2019, then-CEO Louis Camillieri said, “A lot of our customers have difficulty imagining a real Ferrari which is fully electric.”
Camillieri stood down at the end of 2020 and Ferrari is still on the hunt for a new CEO. In the meantime it falls to Elkann, grandson of Gianni Agnelli, to run the company. In a message to investors Elkann said, “We are continuing to execute our electrification strategy in a highly disciplined way. Our interpretation and application of these technologies both in motorsport and in road cars is a huge opportunity to bring the uniqueness and passion of Ferrari to new generations.”
Despite cries from die-hard fans there’s no doubt that there is a growing demand for ultra-high-performance EVs. The Porsche Taycan is close to outselling the 911, while the order books at Rimac, Pininfarina, and Lotus are full, and even such traditionalists as Bentley have announced plans to go completely electric.
