Filming for the next Italian motor movie Maserati: The Brothers is underway at Rome’s Cinecittà studios and the cameras will also roll in Modena and Bologna, reports Deadline.

As the title suggests the movie will tell the story of Alfieri, Ettore and Ernesto Maserati who laid the foundations for the firm back in 1914. although it would take until 1926 for the brothers to have their first race car, the Tipo 26, ready for that year’s Targa Florio. A year later Alfieri was severely injured when he crashed a Tipo 26B at Messina, which would ultimately lead to his early demise in 1932.

Even as Alfieri declined the company and its cars went from strength to strength, with Tazio Nuvolari leading the charge from behind the wheel of his 8CM and claiming Grand Prix wins in Belgium and Nice. Despite the glory, Maserati was struggling financially and sold out to Adolfo Orsi in 1937, moving to Modena to build race and road cars, where it remains today.

Maserati’s remarkable story is being brought to life by Producer Andrea Iervolino, who was part of the team behind Ferrari, while his previous company also produced Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend, directed by Bobby Moresco who will again be behind the cameras.

“Cinecittà is a place where dreams come to life, and for a passionate, complex story like Maserati: The Brothers, it is the perfect setting,” Moresco said. “This is a story of resilience, innovation, and the human spirit, and I couldn’t be prouder of the team and cast bringing it to light.”

While cars will be the stars as far as much of the audience is concerned there’s also an international cast including Andy Garcia, Jessica Alba, Anthony Hopkins and Michele Morrone. Maserati: The Brothers is expected to hit theaters in late 2025, while Iervolino is also pushing ahead with a Bugatti biopic.

I can imagine this of interest only to members of the Maserati Owners Group. That would be a waste of an all-star cast.

I don’t know a lot of details of the backstory of the Maserati brothers, but if the film has some good racing footage, it will be fun to watch. I haven’t seen the Lamborghini movie, but I did find the Ferrari movie illuminating, even if Ford v. Ferrari was much more exciting.
