Honda teases 2023 Type R (again), promises more power
Honda launched the Civic in the United States on July 11, 1972, starting a legacy of reliable transport. Fifty years later, the company is showing us how far its efficient compact has come by sharing a teaser of the 2023 Civic Type R hitting the track. Consider it a birthday present for the brand’s all-time best-selling model. The dark photo that Honda released of the car’s front end doesn’t reveal much, perhaps even less than the well-lit ones it shared of the car wrapped up in camo, but it does seem to confirm our suspicions that the new model will be more subdued than the previous one (which we adored by the way).
Honda has been tight-lipped about sharing any details, although it did note that the 2023 model will be the most powerful Honda-branded production vehicle ever offered in the U.S. Don’t expect Acura NSX levels of power, but considering the last Type R punched out 306 hp and made great use of it with plenty of grip, a well-tuned chassis, and confident brakes, the bar for this car is high. We’ll get to see all the camo come off on July 20 at 7:00 p.m. Pacific when we’ll find out how much more power the Type R will bring to bear on the competition—and to what degree this longtime boy-racer’s looks have been toned down.
