Roll Like a President in an Armored Cadillac Limo
Most government vehicles that make their way across the auction block are pretty mundane, but there’s an exception coming to Mecum’s Kissimmee 2025 sale. It’s a big one, both metaphorically and literally: The auction house is selling a 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham limousine built for then-President Bill Clinton.
Assigned VIN 1G6DW52P7TR710054, this Fleetwood Brougham is one of three identical limousines built for the president according to a period press release, and it’s the only one that has made its way into private hands. Good luck trying to buy one of the other two: There’s one in the Clinton Museum in Little Rock, Arkansas, and the other remains with the CIA, so who knows where it’s currently stashed.
Building a limo fit for a president required substantial modifications—we’re not talking about a Hummer H2 stretched for bachelorette parties in Las Vegas. The 270-inch long sedan features a roof panel raised by three inches, three-inch-thick bulletproof door windows, and B6-level body armor. Secret Service agents carefully supervised every part of the design, development, and manufacturing processes.
The six-seater interior features leather upholstery, Zebrano wood interior trim, plus onboard oxygen and fire suppression systems. Delco provided custom engine monitoring gauges, and the folks riding in the third-row seats can watch VHS tapes on a small Thomson television—that’s about as 1990s as it gets!
Power comes from a 454-cubic-inch (7.4-liter) V-8 that was hand-built by Jack Roush, according to the auction description, though how Roush ended up involved in this project is a mystery. Its output hasn’t been revealed, but we hope it’s powerful because the limo weighs 12,000 pounds. What’s certain is that it hasn’t been driven much: its odometer displays precisely 626 miles.
If you want to add President Clinton’s limousine to your collection, you’ve got three options. One, hope that the Clinton Museum is open to offers. Two, leave one of those “I’d like to buy your car” notes in the CIA’s mailbox. Three, head on down to Mecum’s Kissimmee auction on January 18, 2025, and place a bid.
This may be the car we saw Clinton in. We stood outside the National Archives one evening after dinner. We saw a lot of cops and caravan of vehicles. Bill come driving by and waived at us since it was only us and the homeless in the shrubs.
I I did not see anyone in a blue dress. lol.
