McLaren goes retro 1980s and we love it

The 1980s were a good time for McLaren Racing, which racked up accolades with Porsche and Honda engines and had racers like Aryton Senna behind the wheel. So it’s no surprise that McLaren posted this retro-themed gem on its YouTube channel, complete 1980s throwback graphics, VCR-worthy video quality, and team introductions that would make TV’s Simon and Simon proud.

All in all, this is a fantastic effort by McLaren’s digital team, and we hope you love it as much as the Hagerty staff did!

It’s fun to look a little closer and note how the sponsorships have changed since the ’80s: small logos for companies like Dell computers and Splunk software are a far cry from the overtly macho appearance of 1980s McLarens in bold red/white Marlboro cigarette livery. That said, McLaren sponsor “A Better Tomorrow” is actually British American Tobacco, so perhaps the ’80s really isn’t that long ago. As the saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
