HPG21 Index Preview: Post-War German Cars

German marques have been incredible performers ever since we began tracking this market segment in 2006, but for a long time they were relatively unheralded as Ferraris garnered most of the attention. The market has fully taken notice now, however, as we have observed increased recognition of this group among collectors, pundits and the press. And for good reason. Hagerty’s Index of Collectible Post-War German Cars saw a 17% gain this past period, which is one of the most aggressive moves we have tracked for any index — ever.

Truth be told, the Gmund coupe exerted a disproportionate influence as two confirmed sales of this rare and desirable model established a new (and impressive) market level for the progenitor of the Porsche brand. Gains here were not reflective of four-month movement, but are more realistically an expression of market changes that have been occurring behind closed doors during the past three years.

Even so, prices swiftly moved upward for most Mercedes and early 911s, making the BMW 507’s 8% gain seem downright sleepy.
