Auction Results: Bonhams’ 2014 Greenwich sale

Bonhams returned to Greenwich on June 1 for its annual Connecticut auction. The sale, held in conjunction with the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, has been a summer kickoff of sorts for the East Coast since 2008. This year’s action was the venue’s most productive in terms of dollar volume, resulting in $8M in sales and 93 of 100 lots selling (93%). The former high total was established in 2013 at $5.3M.

Top seller for the day was a beautiful 1975 Lamborghini Countach periscopica in dark blue that sold for $1.21M. This figure exceeded the previous record of $836,000 that Bonhams earned last August for another periscopica, illustrating how strong the first Countaches are in the market. In a similar vein, a 1961 flat-floor Jaguar E-Type convertible sold for $335,500, which is a price that continues to advance the bullish market for the earliest XKEs. Another notable sale was Bill Fitch’s one-of-one Fitch Phoenix, which combined a modified Corvair platform and a body built by Intermeccanica. The prototype model sold for $253,000.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of all came when a 13,000-mile 1973 Volvo 1800ES with 4-speed sold for a record $92,400. Expect to see more low-mile examples of Volvo’s stylish two-door wagon appear in the wake of this sale.
