Auction Results: Auctions America’s 2013 Fall Auburn sale

RM subsidiary Auctions America conducted its third Fall Auburn sale in Indiana on Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, 2013. The sale was a tremendous success with $26.7M in total vehicle sales, including buyer’s premium. The total was the biggest Fall Auburn result for the company since it revived the famous sale in 2011. In all, 747 of 1,117 vehicular lots sold for a 67% sales rate.

Three Duesenbergs topped the sales list, with a 1930 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Convertible Coupe selling for $1.54M. The well-documented car was an older restoration that was still holding up well, but more importantly the J carried one of the most desirable body styles, and the sale price was fair market for the car. A rare 1929 Duesenberg Model J Sports Sedan that also received a restoration 30 years ago sold for $962,500, and a 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Dual-Cowl Phaeton sold for $858,000.

Possibly the biggest surprise of the long weekend was a 1955 Chevrolet Cameo pickup truck, which set a record with a $101,750 sale price. The expertly restored two-tone truck presented exceptionally well and demonstrates how far pickups have come in the past 50 years. A 2006 Ford GT sold for $225,500, also serving as further proof that this car is not on the same curve as most of “yesterday’s supercars.” A trio of Mercedes-Benz 190SLs sold for an average of $106,700, further emphasizing that these cars are legitimate six-figure automobiles, and an R107 Mercedes-Benz SL also illustrated rising prices for the model with a 1987 560SL selling for $23,375. A rarely seen Kaiser Dragon in need of attention sold for $9,680.
