Toyota’s Supra and Tacoma SEMA projects target the street and trail
Toyota shared four SEMA projects back in November but saved two that are worthy of you holiday wish lists: a targa-topped Supra and an overlanding Tacoma trailer.
We had a ton of fun when we had the chance to drive both flavors of 2021 GR Supra, and enthusiasts seem to agree that it’s a great handling machine with plenty of power to provide thrills. One thing that’s missing, however, is a drop-top or targa. This 2021 GR Supra remedies that gap in Toyota’s lineup and uses a pair of composite panels to create an open-air driving experience. Engineers added some chassis reinforcements to help ensure that the Supra maintains as much rigidity as possible and added a nod to the Mk IV Supra and its iconic rear wing. When not installed, the piano-black roof panels can fit in the trunk.
The trailer is meant to accompany the overlanding Tacoma that Toyota shared back in November. While the pickup packed all of the off-road features you’d need to trek into the wilderness, the matching trailer brings some much-appreciated comforts for basecamp.
The Tacoma has a bed-mounted tent, but in case you’ve got a bigger expedition team or you’d like to pull this trailer behind your 4Runner and don’t want to add any extra height, this trailer also comes with a four-person Yakima tent that’s mounted to a platform that raises up via scissor-lift. That platform has awnings and lights for all-hours and all-weather utility. Toyota managed to fit a sink, stove, and refrigerator for a kitchen away from home as well as a hot water heater and toilet to provide bathroom amenities. There are lots of places to stow things inside and under the bed, including a freshwater tank for cooking or showers and a grey water tank for the sink drain.
A Tacoma TRD Pro pulling a matching bed trailer would surely draw a crowd at any off-road expo and of course, would be the envy of just about any camper.
