Hagertys Cars That Matter Market Watch- 1956-57 Continental MK II

In its heyday, the Continental MK II (they weren’t sold as Lincolns, Continental was a separate marque) were the cars of kings and celebrity royalty like The Shah of Iran, Elvis and Frank Sinatra. They cost over $10,000 new (more than $100,000 in today’s money).

Like the 1963-65 Buick Riviera and 1966-67 Oldsmobile Toronado, the Continental MK II is one of those cars that many of us knew had to be discovered by collectors eventually. It was like a train you could see coming down the track from miles away. But at times, the train seemed to be moving at about two miles per hour.

Over the last three years or so, however, Continental MK II prices finally started to head for the six figure level we all thought they should have been at years ago. The best ones can now nudge that magic barrier but it takes a truly great one to get there and these are tremendously expensive cars to restore. Because of this, it pays to stick with either the best restored cars or a well-preserved original.
