McQueen’s ’51 Chevy Styleline DeLuxe Convertible set to cross the block
Steve McQueen’s gorgeous ride in the “The Hunter” will soon be “the hunted.” Later this month, Auctions America by RM will auction the 1951 Chevrolet Styleline DeLuxe Convertible that McQueen drove in the final movie of his illustrious career.
McQueen purchased the Styleline after “The Hunter” wrapped and added it to his personal collection. The yellow convertible with stainless moldings and leather interior will go on the block during Auction America’s Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) sale March 22-24. The car, which is equipped with a 92 hp six-cylinder engine and mated to a column-mounted, three-speed manual transmission, is expected to draw plenty of attention simply because it was McQueen’s.
“Steve McQueen was the ultimate ‘King of Cool,’ and is arguably one of Hollywood’s best-know and most-celebrated car collectors of all time,” said Donnie Gould, president of Auctions America by RM.
The Styleline is currently owned by Rick Harrison, of the History Channel’s “Pawn Stars.” Harrison is expected to attend the auction.
Other “celebrity” cars at the Fort Lauderdale sale are a 1969 Dodge Charger “General Lee” used in the 2005 film “Dukes of Hazzard” and signed by the cast of the original television series; a 1971 Dodge 340 Challenger Convertible used during the 1972 season of TV’s “Mod Squad;” and a 1966 Chrysler Imperial “Black Beauty” Green Hornet Continuation car, built by famed customizers George Barris and Dick Dean.
