Vintage: Check out swap meet, race event
This coming weekend will be action-packed for classic car and vintage racing enthusiasts.
The action kicks off Friday afternoon with the annual Coastal Swap Meet at the Tradex Exhibition Centre in Abbotsford. The show opens at 2 p.m. on Friday and goes to 9 p.m. Doors open Saturday at 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
If you are restoring a classic, building a hot rod or custom car and are looking for hard-to-find parts, memorabilia, anything and everything automotive it will be available from hundreds of vendors set up inside and outside Tradex. There is also a car corral offering complete vehicles for sale. Tickets are available at the door for $5.
For on-track action, head to Mission Raceway Park on Saturday and Sunday for the Vintage Racing Club of British Columbia’s 26th annual British Columbia Historic Motor Races.
“Nowhere else in British Columbia can road racing fans get as up close and personal with these wonderful machines and their drivers, and be able to see some of the world’s finest race-bred marques racing for the checkered flag,” says event chairman Tom Johnston.
A new feature this year is the Hagerty Formula Festival, featuring 35 Formula Ford and Super Vees competing in exciting wheel-to-wheel racing. The race weekend will also include a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Chevrolet Corvette, ‘America’s Sports Car.’
If you come to the event in a collector car, motorcycle or other interesting vehicle to display in the collector vehicle corral, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a supervised track tour at lunch time on both Saturday and Sunday.
The popular ‘Hot Laps 4 Kidz’ returns this year. For a small donation fans can experience a few fast laps around the 2.4-kilometre Mission Raceway track in a supercar, driven by a professional driver. All proceeds go to B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation and Children’s Wish.
You will have to come and see for yourself what dream car ride is available for you to experience. Entry at the gate is $15 a person or $40 for a carload (max. five occupants). For more information go to bchmr.ca
