The incredibly versatile custom van is a symbol of adventure, leisure and independence, and it became the ultimate blank canvas for self-expression.

As the infinitely blander (but much more practical) minivan became the norm, the world of porthole windows, whimsical murals and wavy waterbeds lived on through a small yet dedicated group of collectors. Thanks to online forums and social media channels coupled with a bit of nostalgia, the cult following has experienced a wonderful resurgence in recent years.

For the Summer 2016 edition of Hagerty magazine, we spoke with the owners of three exceptional custom vans. These are the photos that we couldn’t fit into the print version.
