Losses and Lessons: Easy picking

VEHICLE COVERED: 1932 Ford Hot Rod

WHAT WENT WRONG: The owner was driving his Ford Hot Rod home from a car show in a neighboring town when it stopped running and he was forced to pull over to the side of the road. Because he was only a mile or so away from his mother’s house, he decided to walk there and borrow some tools from the garage.

When he returned an hour later, the ’32 was nowhere in sight. He assumed the police had simply towed it to an impound yard, but that wasn’t the case. The police opened an investigation. Based on tire tracks and footprints, they believe the car was loaded onto a flatbed truck and stolen.

DAMAGE/LOSS: The car has not been recovered. Hagerty paid the client $35,000 – the Guaranteed Value of the vehicle.

LESSON: If you break down on the side of the road, call Hagerty Plus Roadside Assistance (888-310-8020) and wait for flatbed truck to assist you. If you don’t have Hagerty Roadside Assistance, call for a tow truck yourself. Left unprotected, a classic car is an easy target for thieves.
