Ladies and gentlemen, start your sleuthing. The Historic Vehicle Association has released a short video to promote the upcoming reveal of the next two cars on the National Historic Vehicle Register. It isn’t offering any obvious visual cues—which, of course, is the point.

The official announcement will be on October 28.

In 2013, the HVA began collaborating with the U.S. Department of the Interior to recognize and document the country’s most historically significant automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, and commercial vehicles. The first member of the National Historic Vehicle Register, the 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe Prototype, was announced in January of 2014. Twenty-five vehicles have followed; the most recent additions, in 2019, were Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean’s 1969 Chevrolet Corvette and a 1966 Volkswagen Deluxe Station Wagon formerly owned by Civil Rights activists Esau and Janie B. Jenkins.

What can we expect to see next? An unidentified voice that we know belongs to Diane Parker, vice president of the HVA, promises “we’ve chosen two cars with absolutely incredible stories.”

Other voices offer these descriptions:

  • “It brought a new sense of what a car is and what a car could be.”
  • “This is a unique story. What it represents is understated elegance. This is art.”
  • “That car made a name for itself. It was a legend.”
  • “You just can’t beat it to this day … It’s the ultimate.”

One of the vehicles looks to be a pre-war sedan, the other classic muscle. Check them out for yourself:

Thankfully, we don’t have to wait much longer to learn the cars’ identities. Watch for our full coverage of the unveiling next week.
