2021 Mustang Mach 1 Handling Package now available with 10-speed auto

The 2021 Mach 1 is Ford’s replacement for the wonderfully understated Mustang Bullitt. While it doesn’t have the characteristic hood scoop we’ve come to expect, the Mach 1 pairs the Bullitt’s 480-hp, 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 with the beefier Tremec 3160 six-speed manual previously used in the GT350. Today, Ford announced that the Handling Package—until now, available only on the six-speed Mach 1—can be ordered with the 10-speed automatic.

The Handling Package, a $3500 option, comes with 19×10.5-inch front wheels and 19×11-inch rear wheels painted in Tarnished Gray and fitted with 305/30 and 315/30 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, respectively. Also included are a unique front splitter, adjustable strut mounts, and a rear spoiler with Gurney flap. Unique chassis tuning helps make the most of those stickier tires. The result? A lot more mechanical grip and 150 percent more downforce than the standard Mustang GT.

The Mach 1’s 10-speed automatic is the same ’box used in the Mustang GT and is nearly identical to the one used in the Camaro SS. On the Mach 1, the 10-speed is a $1595 option that was previously unavailable with the Handling Package. Enough serious buyers clamored for the quick-shifting auto to make Ford reevaluate its decision, however. The slick-shifting manual may be more fun, but the 10-speed’s closely-spaced gears help shave tenths off lap times via better torque multiplication.
