Exactly 73 years after test pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier—also known as Mach 1—Ford is honoring Yeager’s record-breaking October 14, 1947 flight by accepting orders for its limited-edition 2021 Mustang Mach 1.

After a 17-year hiatus, the Mach 1 fastback coupe returns with a 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 engine that produces 480 horsepower at 7000 rpm and 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm, essentially replacing the Shelby GT350 and GT350R, which Ford announced earlier this month would both be shelved at completion of the 2020 models.

The original Ford Mustang Mach 1 was rolled out in 1969.

The new Mach 1 can be had with either a six-speed Tremec 3160 manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic. The Mach 1 will ride on standard MagneRide dampers and feature a stiffened the steering I-shaft and stiffer sway bars and front springs.

The car’s aerodynamic design includes faux-lamp elements up front (an ode to the car’s heritage), but not a shaker hood seen on previous models. Instead, a two-piece upper grille, lower grille, lower valence, and side grilles optimize airflow and cooling.

When the Mach 1 was revealed in June, Ford Performance marketing chief Jim Owens said, “This car has a much bigger aero package than any of the GT cars. From the front end to the subframe and stiffer springs, everything has been engineered specifically to the aero, tires, and engine. This is not a PP2 [on top of] the upgraded 5.0-liter.”

The 2021 Mustang Mach 1 will arrive at U.S. and Canadian Ford dealerships in the spring of 2021. It starts with an MSRP of $51,720 (plus $1195 destination and delivery charge).
