McLaren hybrid supercar on track for 2021
McLaren has confirmed that its new High-Performance Hybrid (HPH) will be on sale in the first half of 2021.
Releasing two photos of the car in camouflage, the British supercar maker also said that 2020 will mark the end of the line for its Sports Series models, concluding with the limited-edition 620R.
The HPH will be powered by a new V-6 engine and will also feature plug-in power with a relatively short range in silent running mode. The car sits on an all-new platform known as McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture which will replace the carbon-fiber MonoCell tub that’s been used as the basis of each model since the first MP4-12C was introduced in 2011. The new architecture has been designed to be flexible so it can underpin all new models from 2021 onwards.
Despite the camouflage, you can see from these first shots that the HPH is every inch a McLaren. The design comes from the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” school, rather offering a truly new take for the hybrid era. Still, money saved on styling should mean money spent on engineering.
McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt says, “This all-new McLaren supercar is the distillation of everything we have done to date; all that we have learned and achieved. This is a new kind of McLaren for a new era, an extraordinary drivers’ car that offers blistering performance as well as an all-electric range capable of covering most urban journeys.”
The HPH is currently undergoing final testing with first customer deliveries promised by mid-2021. It will nestle between the GT and the 720S range and will be the first production series hybrid from McLaren and taking learnings from the P1 and Speedtail.
