Honda is bringing back the S2000, sort of

Honda is throwing the venerable S2000 roadster a 20th birthday party at the Tokyo Auto Salon coming up in January. The centerpiece will be a special concept version of the sought-after roadster, based on the AP1-generation (1999-2003) car. Honda’s accessories division—smartly named Honda Access—will up-fit the car with a gaggle of parts to bring a modern twist on the design.

The upshot? There’s always a chance the high-revving S2000 could get more factory aftermarket support in the near future, if the concept garners enough interest. After all, Japanese automakers Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda are already providing factory parts support for ‘90s tuner favorites.

The concept will sport new side sills, bumpers, fenders and a new spoiler. The interior looks like it will have relatively few changes—visible form the teaser picture are two gorgeous red seats that look very similar to the optional seats from when the car was new. Besides the seats, the only other interior mod looks to be an updated stereo.

Mechanical updates to the concept are sparse; the only changes of note are slick, 17-inch Advan RZ2 wheels, plus an updated suspension system. The suspension is especially intriguing, though—we’re curious what such revisions would do to a car that already had notoriously lively handling.

Roadsters not your style? Perhaps the Honda Civic Cyber Night Japan Cruiser 2020 is more to your liking. Based on the first-generation 1997 Honda Civic Type R (EK9, for short), the concept is said to have been dreamt up as a hatch for “modern life.” Honda Access says the car “reflects a neo-Japan where the near future and underground are disturbed.” Sounds dark, but if it means hot hatches like this, maybe we’re here for it.

The Tokyo Auto Salon will run from January 10-12 at the Makuhari Messe International Convention Complex in Chiba-city, Japan.
