Maserati says an electric version of its supercar is also coming

Now sitting at the top of FCA’s range, Maserati is promising quite a few changes in the coming years. The brand’s first hybrid will be the upcoming Ghibli, followed by the full-electric 2021 GranTurismo models (both coupe and convertible), as well as an electric version of Maserati’s new super sports car, greenlighted by the modernization of the Modena plant. And yes, a new utility vehicle is also inevitable.

How is this possible? Well, in addition to taking over the cutting-edge digital innovation lab originally set up for Alfa Romeo, Maserati spent $870 million on its Mirafiori production hub in order for those high-voltage GranTurismos and GranCabrios to hit the streets by 2022. However, Maserati’s flagship supercar will still be built in Modena at the company’s headquarters, where all trident-bearing cars continue to be developed and tested. For the top of Maserati’s range, that’s been the sacred production location for over 80 years.

Last but not least, Maserati is working on yet another utility vehicle, which will be built at Cassino in central Italy following another $870-million investment in the new production line. Maserati expects the first pre-production SUVs to roll off the line by 2021.

With all design, development, and production staying in Italy, Maserati’s next big thing will be a reveal event in May, where “past and future will meet.”

In the meantime, this is what Maserati waved goodbye to before entering this decade:
