Mach-E got you down? Buy this Mustang race car

There’s a significant amount of backlash and discontent being lobbed at Ford right now for its decision to include the beloved Mustang name on the all-electric 2021 Mustang Mach-E crossover. Regardless of where you fall along the spectrum of curiosity vs. rage vs. excitement about that strategic move, it’s worth remembering what the Mustang badge has represented from the ‘60s through today. For that, we invite you to take a gander at this delightful 1965 Ford Mustang race car up for auction on Bring a Trailer.

This blue-striped ride is currently equipped for turnkey lapping in the Historic Sportscar Racing’s (HSR) Group 3 class. It sports a 302-cubic-inch V-8 with an Eagle forged crankshaft, Carillo connecting rods, and Wiseco Forged 10.5:1 compression pistons. Topping off that stout short-block is a pair of blueprinted 289 cylinder heads, making this thing is a certified screamer.

That engine bolts up to a Richmond Super T10 four-speed manual transmission that sends power through a recently-refurbished Ford nine-inch rear end. Should you somehow manage to lunch the transmission or this wonderful engine, this sale kindly includes a spare of each, along with additional wheels.

There’s documentation to show FIA certifications from 1992 and 2011 as well, along with a Historic Sportscar Racing logbook and other paperwork. The interior is sparse, with a single Kirkey seat nestled in the bird’s nest of a roll-cage and basic rocker switches for all your selecting needs—save for that sweet, sweet, Hurst shifter to pick the right gear. It’s exactly what you’d want out of a gorgeous, seemingly well-sorted race car.

Perhaps the most enjoyable part of this listing is the awesome in-car video provided by the seller, showing the car being thrown around by the scruff of its neck at Road Atlanta during a Fall Historics gathering earlier this year.

Sit back and enjoy real, honest noise from a real, honest Mustang.
