2021 Mercedes GLE “coupe” to debut as AMG model

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the coupe version of the 2021 GLE utility vehicle and, for a change, Americans will get the high-performance European model before the lower-powered variants land State-side. In this case, that enhanced version would be the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 Coupe, with a 48-volt mild hybrid system and an electric supercharger augmenting the stock GLE’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six for a combined 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. 

Unlike competing German SUV “coupes” at Audi and BMW, which are fairly well distinguished from their long-roof platform mates, the GLE Coupe looks a lot like the regular GLE. The most noticeable styling difference, besides the roof, is the AMG-specific front grille. Other styling changes were not necessarily an improvement, as the curved fastback roofline on such a tall, high-riding vehicle ends up making the AMG GLE53 look a bit awkward and chubby. If it were a 13-year-old, its mom would be shopping in the “husky” section. 

Whether it’s to your tastes or not, the AMG GLE53 Coupe certainly can get out of its own way, with a stated 0–60 mph time of 5.2 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph. Power is sent to all four of the black, 21-inch, 14-spoke aluminum wheels (22s are optional) through a nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT automatic gearbox, and a fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. The SUV’s air suspension also gets AMG Ride Control, while Active Ride Control is optional. The electrically assisted steering features speed sensitivity and a variable ratio system. The AMG Dynamic Select system allows you to set driving modes to Comfort or Sport, which alters steering assists and changes vehicle height via the air suspension.

Ventilated and drilled 15.75-inch brake rotors up front are gripped by fixed silver calipers with black AMG logos, while the smaller rear discs are ventilated and slowed with floating calipers.

Inside, you have your usual wide choice of color and trim options, with an AMG-specific Supersport touchscreen for the MBUX infotainment system. However, AMG GLE53 owners that want to track their vehicle will be able to order the AMG Track Pace data and video recorder application.

Of course, after it starts arriving at dealers next summer, you will be more likely to find the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 Coupe running carpool than on a race track—though it’ll probably be near the front of the pick-up queue.
