Maserati drops Ferrari V-8 for new twin-turbo V-6
Maserati is reported to be replacing its long-serving Ferrari-sourced 4.7-liter V-8 in favor of an all-new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6. The new six-cylinder will be built in-house.
The engine is set to make its debut in the MC20 super sports car where it will produce 542 hp and be mounted amidships. The news comes from Automotive News Europe, which also claims that a less powerful 523-hp derivative will be fitted to the next generation of GranTurismo and GranCabrio, along with a new, smaller crossover.
The V-6 will feature electrification and a Formula 1-derived lean burn technology called turbulent jet ignition, developed by German powertrain specialist Mahle. It’s a homogeneous combustion system not unlike Mazda’s Skyactiv-X that improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions.
Maserati is currently testing its MC20 prototype and is due to unveil the production version in September.
