Ford Ranger adds two-wheel-drive FX2 off-road package

For now, Ford is keeping the Ranger Raptor away from our shores, but in the meantime, if you’re looking for a two-wheel drive Ranger pickup with a bit more off-road capability and style, the Dearborn-based automaker has introduced the Ranger FX2 Package for the 2020 Ranger.

As it is specifically being marketed as an urban vehicle, one might think those buyers who do take the FX2-equipped Ranger off-road might find some challenges, but for a truck that doesn’t have four-wheel drive, Ford is specifying some serious hardware. The FX2 kit is not just an appearance package.

Brian Bell, marketing manager for the Ranger, explains, “FX2 expands Ranger’s options for customers who want tough, off-road style with the functionality of a locking differential but don’t need four-wheel drive.”

From the sales of the competing Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4×2, rear-wheel drive Chevy Colorado Z71, and Nissan Frontier Desert Runner, it’s clear that those customers exist.

To improve the stock Ranger’s performance in poor traction conditions, the FX2 Package comes with that electronically controlled, locking rear differential, and the suspension is tuned for rugged, off-road use. Big-lugged 17-inch off-road tires mounted to aluminum wheels are standard, with 18-inchers an option. The stock Ranger’s front air dam has been deleted in favor of a front underbody shield that protects mechanical components while improving approach angles. Also part of the package is Ford’s off-road cluster screen on the instrument panel that displays real-time pitch, yaw, and roll angles.

The FX2 Package slots in below the Ranger’s FX4 option group, which, in addition to four-wheel-drive, adds skid plates and a terrain-management system to the off-road shocks, tires, and locking diff.

The off-road performance and dress-up package will run $595, which sounds like a relative bargain, and will be available when deliveries begin late this year.
