One-off Charger Hellcat Widebody to tackle Pikes Peak
Dodge recently introduced the 2020 Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody that it has been teasing for the past few months, and to celebrate the most powerful and fastest mass-produced sedan currently available, the company announced today that it has race-prepped a concept version of the Charger Widebody to make a run up to the clouds in this year’s 97th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Racer Randy Pobst will be at the wheel, making his fourth attempt to conquer the Colorado Rockies.
The hillclimb concept’s 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V-8 engine has been specially tuned to perform at the Peak’s 14,115 foot altitude, and the car been given appropriate safety gear, specially tuned Bilstein shock absorbers, and Pagid RST 1 racing brake pads suitable for the 156 turns on the 12.4 mile course.
The concept has the same red, black, and gray over white SRT livery that FCA revealed on the Charger Widebody that it previewed a couple of months ago at the SpringFest14 Mopar festival.
FCA turned to Lansing Michigan’s Wesley Motorsports to prep the car for Pikes Peak. It’s running on Toyo Proxes RR DOT Competition tires mounted to 20 inch wheels that are 11 inches wide and its equipped with a full FIA-legal roll cage, racing seat, and fuel cell. Most of the mechanical bits, however, are unchanged from the production Charger Widebody, including the Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston stoppers in the back, and an SRT-calibrated eight-speed automatic transmission. The hillclimb car even has air conditioning.
Joining the 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody for the June 30, 2019 event will be a prepped Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody, with Keven Wesley Driving.
The 97th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is set for Sunday, June 30. The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody concept will compete in the Exhibition Class.
