The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 pumps out 760 hp

Ford Motor Company announced today that the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500‘s 5.2-liter, supercharged, cross-plane crank V-8 will put out 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. Ford is saying those figures make it the most power- and torque-dense supercharged V-8 in production today, and that the all-new GT500 will be the most powerful street-legal factory-built Ford so far.

Essentially, the GT500 is aiming to put the Dodge Hellcat and Redeye on notice.

That power will be transmitted to the wheels via another piece of all-new kit, a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox from Tremec that is exclusive to the GT500 for now.

When Ford introduced the new 2020 GT500 back at the Detroit Auto Show in January, it said that the new Shelby Mustang would have at least 700 horsepower, but wouldn’t quote exact specifications. Now we know that the GT500 will slot between the Camaro ZL1’s 650 hp and the Redeye Dodges that have 797, when it comes to muscle car bragging rights. The 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 will even be more powerful (by 5 hp) than the Chevrolet’s “King of the Hill” 2019 Corvette ZR1.

Of course, the new GT500 is about a lot more than raw straight-line power. The top-tier Shelby will likely run circles around the last live-axle GT500, owing to its independent rear suspension, MagneRide dampers, huge 16.5-inch two-piece brake rotors with six-piston calipers up front, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber, and a full-on aero kit. An optional Carbon Fiber Track Pack will tack on carbon-fiber wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, dive planes up front, an adjustable carbon rear wing for improved downforce, and a rear-seat delete from the factory.

The new kingsnake Mustang will likely arrive at dealers in the third quarter of this year. For Shelby Mustang fans who are at this point looking to add the latest and greatest pony alongside their GT350R, the GT500 can’t come soon enough.
