BMW teases the production 8 Series Gran Coupe
BMW is applying its multi-version approach to the 8 Series, with a teaser photo of the upcoming Gran Coupe model on its Facebook page. It was previously shown in near-production form as the M8 Gran Coupe concept at last year’s Geneva Motor Show and Pebble Beach Concours. The fastback four door will go up against the Audi A7, Porsche Panamera, and Mercedes-AMG GT when it does arrive at dealers. This follows the template of other BMW lines, with an odd-numbered sedan plus even-numbered coupe and four-door Gran Coupe. The same formula applies to the odd-numbered SUVs and their fastback “coupe” even-numbered counterparts.
As with all of the products from the Bavarian automaker, the 8 Series Gran Coupe is instantly recognizable as a BMW, though with sharper lines than the similar-sized 7 Series sedan. Despite the additional doors, the Gran Coupe mimics the silhouette of the coupe, down to the duck-tail rear deck lid.
Other than the photo, no details were released. The sleeker version of the 8 Series sedan will likely be offered with a 335-horsepower inline-six, the 456 hp twin-turbo V-8 from the M850i, and in M trim, the M5’s 600-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8.
