Chevy (or GMC) plans to make an all-electric pickup
In a conference call with investors about first-quarter earnings, General Motors CEO Mary Barra confirmed that the automaker will be making a full-size pickup truck that runs on electricity.
The confirmation follows the news that Ford Motor Company has invested a half billion dollars in electric vehicle startup Rivian, which is working on a battery-electric pickup, a venture that Ford says is separate from its earlier announced plans to make an electric version of its best-selling F-150 truck. Ford’s investment in Rivian followed the collapse of talks between GM and the EV startup.
“GM has an industry-leading truck franchise and industry-leading electrification capabilities. I assure you we will not cede our leadership on either front,” Barra said. “We intend to create an all-electric future that includes a complete range of EVs — including full-size pickups.”
When contacted by the Detroit News, a GM spokesman declined to give any details or time frame for the project.
Regarding the main topic of the conference call, General Motors reported $2.1 billion in income for the first quarter, up 93.2 percent from the same period last year, on $34.9 billion in revenue. Earnings before income and taxes were $2.3 billion, with $1.9 billion of that coming from GM’s North American operations.
