Limited-edition Driver Series Corvette is a Grand Sport with a bit of flavor

Chevrolet has another special-edition for Corvette collectors to add to their short-list. In anticipation of the Rolex 24 endurance race at Daytona International Speedway, Chevrolet unveiled the 2019 Corvette Driver Series Edition. Based upon the track-tuned Grand Sport model, these unique cars get new liveries and trim based on the preferences of Corvette Racing’s driver roster.

In line with the IMSA Corvette C7.Rs competing in this weekend at Daytona, these special edition ’Vettes house a naturally aspirated engine with a dry-sump oil system. Though, the C7.R produces a few more ponies than the road-going Grand Sport’s 460-hp 6.2-liter LT1 engine.

The Driver Series Grand Sports will definitely look the part, with wide fenders, sticky summer-only Michelins, and functional brake ducts. “Each driver worked with Chevrolet designers on the graphics for their respective edition, giving the cars distinctly personalized appearances,” says Steve Majoros, director of Chevrolet passenger car and crossover marketing. Four out of the six C7.R drivers were selected to be part of the design process—Tommy Milner (Elkhart Lake Blue), Oliver Gavin (Shadow Gray), Jan Magnussen (Arctic White), and Antonio Garcia (Racing Yellow). The special edition cars will be available in Grand Sport 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT trims.

Corvettes will always be collectible, whether it’s a rental car or of the mid-engine variety. And while Chevrolet could have decked out the more aggressive ZR1 or Z06 in these racer-designed liveries, festooning Grand Sports with these visual add-ons seems like the right call. The Driver Series ’Vettes will be snatched up by collectors who want to own something tied to racing, but don’t want their butt to pucker every time they press the loud pedal. To set them apart from other Corvettes with aftermarket paint and trim, the four different editions come replete with driver-specific interior plaques.

The four drivers selected to personalize the Grand Sports have at least 14 IMSA victories to their name. To the other drivers competing for Corvette Racing this weekend, Rockenfeller and Fässler, guess you’ll have to win a few more before you can have your own personalized ’Vette. You can start this weekend.
