Lamborghini Museum restores its Espada and Islero for 50th anniversary

Lamborghini has plenty to celebrate when it comes to heritage, but 2018 stands out as the 50-year anniversary of the brand’s Espada and Islero models. And while visitors to the Lamborghini Museum have been able to enjoy seeing these cars in the past, the cars will be taking the show on the road in early September.

To kick off the celebration, Lamborghini Polo Storico—which is in charge of Lamborghini’s heritage activities—completed restoration on the Espada and Islero from the Lamborghini Museum.

The Espada stands as Lamborghinis first production four-seat model, and also first to be offered with an automatic transmission. Over its 10 years and three series of production, 1226 Espadas left the factory, making it among the most highest-production vehicles to wear the raging bull badge.

The Islero might not have the strong pedigree of the Espada, but with its 400GT underpinnings it is a very capable touring car. The body lines were penned by Mario Marazzi of Carrozzeria Marazzi, who incorporated a wider track and larger tires. Unlike the Espada, Islero production stayed low with only 225 rolling out the Lamborghini’s big door in Sant’Agata Bolognese.

The larger celebration, set to begin September 7-11, is organized by Polo Storico Lamborghini and will shepherd driving tour participants along 650 kilometers (roughly 400 miles) of central Italy’s finest roads. The tour will visit local wineries, cathedrals, and more on its way to the finish at the factory in Sant’Agata Bolongese, where workers are busy building Aventadors, Huracans, and the new Urus SUV.
