GM Recalls 13K 2024–25 Corvettes for Wonky Seat Belt Retractors

Chevrolet

General Motors has issued a recall for 13,464 C8 Corvettes from the 2024 and 2025 model years that may have malfunctioning seat belt retractors.

On June 6, GM issued a safety report noting that it had discovered that the seat belt retractors on the driver and/or the passenger side of the two-seat, mid-engine sports car may malfunction, causing them to lock in the stowed position. If this happens, the occupants can’t access the seat belt to buckle up before a drive. (Obligatory obvious statement: Don’t go out for a drive if you can’t buckle up.)

Chevy dealers will replace the seat belt retractors free of charge, following a letter campaign to notify affected owners. That campaign is expected to begin on July 22, according to recall documents on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website.

However, it appears that the remedy may take a bit; in a stop-delivery notice sent to dealers on June 6, GM noted that the parts for the fix are not currently available.

To get ahead of the process and check if your C8 Corvette is involved in this recall, you can visit the NHTSA’s website and enter your VIN. Alternatively, you can do the same thing in the GM Owner Center, linked here.

I would think GM would use the retractor they use on all their vehicles not make one special for corvettes only
