This Volkswagen is in costume. Do you like it?
Are you looking for a short-wheelbase 1940 Ford Tudor convertible? Or perhaps a late ’60s Volkswagen Beetle with a different hood? Or maybe both? You’re in luck! We found just such a car for sale on eBay in Iowa, with a Buy-it-Now price of $12,997.
Depending on your perspective, this is either a bargain or buffoonery, as Hagerty’s average insured value for a ’40 Ford Tudor (condition 3) is about $50,000, while a 1968 VW Beetle in similar condition is worth about $9,000. But obviously, this car is neither of those cars. Instead, it is a mildly rebodied ’68 Beetle intended to look like the domestic pre-war convertible.
According to the ad, “This is not some ‘BACK-YARD’ conversion! This is a PROFESSIONALLY done HIGH $$$ [sic] conversion that completed [sic] by a professional body-shop with the utmost detail given to making this VW as similar to a 40’ [sic] Deluxe as possible. First and foremost, check out the frontend [sic]! It’s remarkably similar to the 40’ [sic] Ford with CORRECT grille and headlights!” [All caps are theirs.]
Yes, the details are similar, how much so we’ll leave up to you. And they don’t look completely foreign either, which makes sense as the Käfer (German for Beetle) and Ford Tudor Deluxe were designed around the same time. However, the replica’s main issue is that its proportions are so far off from those of an honest Tudor. Not surprising considering that this recreation is based on a Bug, and the only real changes were to its sheetmetal.
On a positive note, the car includes a “TOTALLY CHROMED 1600-cc DUAL-port VW power plant” with rebuilt carbs, new plugs, wires and battery. A fresh interior is also part of the package. The seller claims that “In the world of classic cars, when something TOTALLY DIFFERENT and TOTALLY UNIQUE comes around, you really need to jump at the chance of ownership – as you NEVER KNOW if you’ll see such a vehicle again!” [Again, all caps theirs.]
While seeing another ’68 VW-based 1940 Ford Tudor Deluxe does seem unlikely, should you “jump at the chance” or stroll casually by and avoid eye contact?
