Auction Preview: Mecum’s 2014 Kansas City sale
Mecum continues through the spring auction season with its spring Kansas City auction. The began yesterday, April 24, and will run through April 26 at the Kansas City Convention Center. Here are five of the 700 cars expected to cross the block that we will be paying close attention to.
1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Sportsroof Coupe 429/375
Lot S95
Hagerty Price Guide: $166,000-$385,000
In 1969, the Boss 429 emerged as Ford’s top-tier Mustang, and their limited quantity and legendary performance mean they tend to cause a stir when they emerge for sale. This example is advertised as one of the first 50 Boss 429s made, is completely documented and listed in the Boss Registry, and benefits from a meticulous 2009 restoration. This is actually one of two Boss 429s that Mecum will offer for sale in the next month, and we will be watching these sales to see how much the muscle market has rebounded.
1965 Sunbeam Tiger Mk IA Convertible
Lot F96
Hagerty Price Guide: $24,900-$82,600
The Sunbeam Tiger is a great blend of small size and brute American V-8 power, but has lagged behind value bumps that “purer” British sports cars like the MGA and Triumph TRs have enjoyed. Until 2013, that is, at which point prices have risen sharply. This Tiger 260 looks to be instant fun and should turn heads as it crosses the block.
1971 Chevrolet C10 Pickup
Lot T171
Hagerty Price Guide: N/A
Trucks have quickly become a very popular part of the collector car hobby. With ease of restoration and affordable prices, new and established collectors have been scooping up good examples left and right. Trucks like this ’71 C10, with a desirable 402-cid big block and a well-equipped interior, are leading the way, and the price it earns should be a good indicator of where the market is at the moment.
1970 Buick GS 455 Stage I Hardtop Coupe
Lot S114
Hagerty Price Guide: $19,500-$87,900
In the muscle car world, the term “Stage I” is one that grabs everyone’s attention. When equipped in a GSX, good examples easily carry a six-figure price tag. Those collectors who want a Stage I for a little less can still pick one up at a more obtainable price when it is equipped in a GS. In the past, these cars endured the market correction well and are still holding steady values. These cars are definitely worth a second look when they surface.
1993 Ford Mustang 5.0 SVT Cobra R Hatchback 302/230
Lot S118
Hagerty Price Guide: $22,500-$58,000
The 5.0 Mustang has been one of America’s dominant performance cars through the ’80s and early ’90s. Following the proven formula of good power at an affordable price, these cars were snatched up by many people and then driven enthusiastically. At the top of the heap is the SVT-tuned Cobra R, and the 107 people who bought one new have seen their investments paid back well. This documented example would be perfect for the collector looking to add something special to their garage.
