Auction Results: Mecum’s 2013 Anaheim sale
Mecum Auctions held its second sale in Anaheim, Calif., this past weekend, Nov. 21-23, 2013. Last year’s event was a barn-burner, with two important historic hot rods headlining the sale. There was no McMullen roadster this year, however, and results were reduced as a result. In all, 391 of 787 vehicles traded hands to the tune of $13.1M, compared to 2012’s final number of $15.0M.
Top sale of the event was a 2006 Ford GT with 9,422 original miles, which earned $246,100, including buyer’s premium. The second high sale was also a Ford GT, this time a 2005 model, which sold for $224,700. Both sales underscore the appeal of these modern supercars, which have been enjoying a value increase for the past few years.
A 1969 COPO Camaro placed third at $192,600, and a rare and fantastically restored 1953 Twin-H Hudson Hornet convertible traded for $160,500. Steve McQueen’s 1938 Harley-Davidson WLD solo sport motorcycle found a new home at $137,500, or about eight times what might otherwise be expected for the model.
Two of the auction’s marquee consignments failed to find new owners, as the 1932 Ford Hi-Boy “Spencer II” roadster was bid to $390,000 but failed to be cut loose, and a 440 Six Pack Plymouth Superbird missed the mark with a $100,000 high bid.
