“Rocket 88” recorded: The song “Rocket 88” is recorded at Sam Phillips’ recording studio in Memphis, Tenn., with Jackie Brenston singing lead.  Oldsmobile’s powerful new model was the centerpiece of this first rock ’n’ roll song.

First Electric Trams: Britain’s first electric trams begin operation in East London.

David Buick dies: The founder of the Buick Motor Company, David Buick, dies at the age of 74.

Charles Brady King is the first person to operate motor car in Detroit: While driving it on Woodward Ave, in the first “dream Cruise,” he was told to “get a horse.”
