Auction Results: Mecum’s 2013 Kissimmee Sale
Mecum Auctions headed south in January once again for its annual Kissimmee, Fla., auction. Last year this sale set a world record for the largest collector car auction ever conducted, while this year’s event raised the bar even higher. Mecum fell short of its ambitious goal of 3,000 cars for the 10-day sale, but still assembled an incredible 2,539 vehicular lots. From this pool, 1,769 of them sold — a 70% rate — for a total of $68.4M. This number compares very well with 2012’s $58.3M and 2011’s $41.1M, and is impressively ranked as the fourth highest-grossing North American auction to occur during the past 12 months. It was also the highest American sale total ever recorded outside of Monterey and Scottsdale.
The auction’s top seller was a Shelby Cobra CSX3301, a restored 427, that traded for $779,100, with commission. A 1968 L88 Corvette traded post-block for $583,000, and an unrestored Mustang Boss 429 placed with a very strong $442,020. Also of note, a 2005 Ford GT sold for $233,200, which underscores the keen interest these cars continue to receive. Sale prices above $200,000 are more and more common for Ford GTs, and these modern supercars seem to have finished depreciating less than 10 years after production.
