The ghosts of once future Porsches, plus a jet duet
Porsche is giving us a look at what might have been by releasing images of designs that never made it past the drawing board. It’s alsojoining the mile-high club in a new collaboration with private jet maker Embraer.
The German manufacturer is revealing its sports car secrets going back to the 1950s in a series of Facebook posts. This first image appears to evoke the 550 Spyder with its diminutive windscreen and exaggerated fenders, but there are also echoes of the 935 in this intriguing sketch.
We’ll be keeping tabs on Porsche’s social media #PorscheUnseen and will keep you posted. Perhaps Porsche will also finally reveal the long-rumored hypercar that was supposed to be fitted with its stillborn Formula 1 engine?
As it teases out its past, Porsche’s present now includes the option to receive a free 911 Turbo S, just as long as you happen to order an $11 million Embraer private jet as well.
Buyers of the Phenom 300E, built by the Brazilian aerospace firm, will also get a matching 911. Both vehicles get two-tone Platinum Silver/Jet Grey metallic paint with coachlines in Brilliant Chrome and Speed Blue. The car’s interior will match the aircraft’s with chalk-colored Alcantara headliner.
Other inspired touches include kick plates embossed with “No Step” lettering and a dash-mounted chronometer with an artificial horizon theme. Buyers will also get a Porsche Design luggage set, and a special edition 1919 Globetimer UTC watch. The LED door lights project “Duet” on the ground. Just ten of these car-plane duets are to be built.
Boris Apenbrink of Porsche’s Exclusive Manufaktur department, said, “The jet is meant to be piloted by the owner himself, and we also wanted the car that was the most fun to drive itself.”
