I was never really a car kid. But in the summer of 1985 I got a job working as a motorcycle messenger in Washington DC. This involved 100 miles per day in downtown traffic, and the pay was by the drop. So it literally paid to be fast. It also paid to be not dead, which created a classic motorsports tension. I went from bike to bike and somehow found myself driving a 1972 Karmann Ghia by 1989. No, this wasn't a great sports car. But it was some kind of sports car, and things devolved from there. I started racing karts and then move the SCCA Club Racing, and then on to collecting ever older cars. This went from 2001 Boxster to 1999 M3 to 1984 Ferrari, and took me all the way back to the '52 MG TD that I still drive to the grocery today. I am not much of a show and shine guy, but prefer to get out there and drive these things. I love to see rare cars on the show field, but I have no patience for polishing and preening. Give me a picnic basket and some fresh brake pads any day.
