Description
Introduced in 1982, the genesis of the Porsche 944 can be traced back to the mid-1970s when Porsche introduced the 924 model. Engineers chose a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a 2+2 seating configuration, creating a practical sports car for everyday use and the first of the so-called “transaxle” cars. The front engine, V8-powered 928 was the next to follow and based on these sales successes and a little styling help from the 924 GTP racecar from 1980, the 944 was born. The 944 also featured a sleek, aerodynamic design that incorporated box fender flares and pop-up headlights, both distinctive features of the era.
Under the hood, the 944 was powered by a 2.5-liter inline-four cylinder engine. Essentially a Porsche 928 V8 engine sliced in half, it was significantly more potent than the 924's Audi-derived powerplant. This engine, coupled with precise handling and a balanced chassis, delivered an exciting driving experience. The Porsche 944 quickly gained popularity for its superb handling, strong performance, and luxurious interior. The Porsche 944 was a groundbreaking model that demonstrated Porsche's ability to evolve and diversify its product lineup. Its introduction in 1982 marked a pivotal moment in the company's history, bridging the gap between the iconic 911 and a new generation of sports cars.
