“What do you call a vehicle that mates pickup truck utility with the exciting appearance and interior luxury of a car? Caballero!” Chevrolet dealers couldn’t have a monopoly on truck sales within General Motors, so dealers from divisions like Pontiac offered GMC trucks. These vehicles shared most of the same platforms and components with Chevrolet but offered a bit more style and comfort, and in some cases, more engine options. So, when Chevrolet introduced a new, sleeker version of the El Camino in 1978, aligning it with the sharp-edged styling of the Malibu, GMC benefitted with its own version, the Caballero. Sporting a one inch longer wheelbase of 117.1 inches, this model shared its front-end sheet metal and doors with the Malibu, while its rear bumper was borrowed from the Malibu station wagon. Notably, the El Camino and Caballero boasted a unique chassis, distinct from any other Chevrolet vehicle at the time.
While Chevy’s El Camino has enjoyed great popularity, the GMC Caballero is hardly as well known. This GMC Caballero is one of just 4,742 built in 1980, perfect for someone who wants utility and excitement in something a little different.
