Description
The release of the "R129" generation Mercedes-Benz SL was a historic moment, marking the first significant redesign of the model in almost two decades and carrying the model into the next century. The new 500 SL boasted a technically advanced, 32-valve light alloy V8 engine with variable valve timing, making it the first Mercedes production engine to generate over 300 horsepower. This car was more than just a sports car, it was a fully accomplished automobile that perfectly blended style, performance, and safety. The power-folding soft top was a remarkable new feature, adding to the car's already impressive list of innovations. The 500 SL was a testament to the idea that safety and sports performance could coexist. It featured a sophisticated safety chassis, an automatically or manually deployed roll bar, and magnesium seat frames with an integral height-adjustable three-point seat belt.
