1960 Imperial Crown Convertible
Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Chrysler Corporation aimed to establish a distinct line of luxury vehicles with their new "Imperial" make in 1955, intended to rival Ford’s Lincoln and General Motors’ Cadillac. Although they shared drivetrain and suspension components with Chryslers, Imperials boasted unique styling that embraced the "Forward Look" aesthetic popularized by Virgil Exner, characterized by their tall tailfins and radical “gunsight” taillights. These works of automotive sculpture were powered by 413 cu-in V8 producing 350 horsepower; and all Imperials were equipped with power steering, seats, brakes, and windows. Three trim levels were available: the Custom, LeBaron, and Crown, with the Crown Convertible receiving a fully hand-stitched leather interior among other upgrades as standard. Only 17,716 Imperials were manufactured in 1960, with the most exclusive being the Crown Convertible (excluding the Crown Limousine), of which only 618 were built. Perfectly encapsulating the automotive opulence of the 1960s, well-optioned and attractively-restored Imperials remain some of the most luxurious road-going machines available today.
Jerry Ferguson, a member of the United States Navy and a co-founder of Biomet Inc., a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of musculoskeletal orthopedic implants and products, was known for his entrepreneurial drive and generosity. He was also an enthusiast of all things 1950s, from music to automobiles. Pursuing his love affair with the automobile, in 1984 Ferguson established the Classic Car Centre of Warsaw, Indiana, a company dedicated to the acquisition and restoration of mid-century American Classics. In operation until his return to Biomet in 1993, today Hagerty Marketplace is proud to offer The Ferguson Collection, comprising the long-hidden remaining inventory and personal collection of Jerry Ferguson.
