35-Years-Owned 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 426 Hemi Four-Speed
Description
Chrysler’s contenders in the booming pony car class finally arrived in the fall of 1969, simultaneously launching the redesigned Plymouth Barracuda and the all-new, slightly larger Dodge Challenger. The latter was aimed directly at the up-market Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird, intending the new Challenger as “the most potent pony car ever.” At launch, the Challenger was available in two series, the Challenger and Challenger R/T (Road and Track), and in three body styles, Two-Door Hardtop, Convertible, and Two-Door Hardtop S.E. The range was powered by virtually every engine in Chrysler’s inventory, offering eight options ranging from a slant six to the thundering 425-horsepower 426 cu-in Hemi V8 in the R/T. R/T buyers were also treated to numerous performance goodies including a Rallye instrument cluster, Rallye suspension with sway bar, and heavy-duty drum brakes. Hemi production came to an end in 1971, followed by the discontinuation of the Challenger in 1974, making Hemi-powered first-generation examples extremely collectible today.
