2003 Porsche Boxster Start-Up and Revving
Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Following the discontinuation of their front-engined models (928 and 968), Porsche needed a new, high-volume model that could be produced efficiently alongside the forthcoming 996-generation 911. Drawing inspiration from the legendary 550 Spyder, the new Porsche Boxster was released for the 1996 model year and featured a mid-mounted, water-cooled 2.5-liter flat six-cylinder engine similar to the 3.4-liter unit later introduced in the 911. In 2000, the model was revised with a more powerful 2.7-liter engine. This mid-engined layout gave the Boxster its unique handling characteristics, commended for having uncanny precision and superior road-holding capabilities compared to its front-engined rivals. In a test comparing the Boxster, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and BMW Z3, Car and Driver wrote, “If there has been a contest going on among BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche to see which German automaker could build the best-performing small roadster…Porsche should be passing out cigars right now.”
