Description
Announced as “America’s most popular mid-size car,” the 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle debuted with revised front-end styling featuring quad headlights and a new grille. The updated Chevelle offered a variety of body styles from a two-door Sport Coupe all the way up to a spacious four-door Station Wagon along with an assortment of trim levels that allowed it to appeal to a vast range of buyers. For the thrill-seeking customer, Chevrolet would offer their Super Sport or SS package as an engine and styling option available on 1969 Malibus and Chevelles. Identified as RPO code “Z25” on the build sheet, this option granted customers the legendary Mark IV big-block V8 and additional Super Sport equipment like specific emblems on the grille, front fenders, and the blacked out taillamp panel, with the SS package also featuring a domed hood and power front disc brakes. Adding option code “L34” granted a Chevelle SS powered with a 396 cu-in engine with a high-performance camshaft, hydraulic lifters, 10.25:1 compression, a Rochester four-barrel carburetor with automatic choke to produce 350 horsepower, and a whopping 415 lb-ft of torque. These cars would capture the attention of many enthusiasts due to the high praise received from automotive publications and the late 1960s muscle car zeitgeist, with true Z25 Super Sport examples like this example on offer important reminders of the era.
