1961 Chevrolet Corvair 95 Rampside Pickup Four-Speed Walk-Around, Start-Up, and Ride-Along
Description
A period advertisement touted the new Chevrolet Corvair 95 as “not merely a new tuck model… it's a new kind of truck.” Deriving its name from its 95-inch wheelbase, the Corvair 95 went on sale for the 1961 model year in Corvan, Loadside, and Rampside configurations, aimed directly at their Volkswagen Type 2 counterparts. Like the passenger Corviar models, the 95 was powered by a rear-mounted, air-cooled, 80 horsepower flat-six, albeit a beefed-up version with more durable exhaust valves, exhaust valve rotators, lowered compression, and carburetors with larger jets for cargo-transporting duties. Of the Pickup models, the Rampside proved most popular thanks to its clever side gate, which could be lowered to form a convenient ramp into the cargo area for “no-lift loading.” Despite GM’s best efforts to beat Volkswagen at its own rear-engined game, the Corvair 95 was discontinued after 1965, making them highly practical and uncommon sought-after collectibles today.
