Description
Mercedes-Benz is responsible for creating a new class of performance sedans capable of outrunning contemporary Ferraris and Porsches with the creation of the 300 SEL 6.3 sedan in 1968. Developed in secret by lead engineer Erich Waxenberger combining the best attributes of the luxurious 300 SEL grand touring sedan with the 6.3-liter V8 and transmission of the 600 “Grosser” to create a conservatively styled sedan that conceals its remarkable performance. The combination of engineering capabilities with innovative technologies bestows this Mercedes with air suspension with automatic level control, a four-speed automatic transmission, power steering, dual-circuit ventilated power disc brakes for all four wheels, air conditioning, power windows, and numerous other amenities. Inside and out, it may appear like any other Mercedes-Benz as it is only under the hood, and the simple designation on that trunk creates the mystique that is the 6.3.
