Description
Production of what would become the Defender commenced in 1983 under the name Land Rover 110, denoting its 110 inch wheelbase. Shortly afterward, the Land Rover 90 (with a 93 inch wheelbase) and Land Rover 127 (featuring a 127 inch wheelbase) were introduced. Initially resembling the Series III Land Rover, the post-1983 models underwent subtle alterations, such as an extended bonnet, a revised grille, and widened wheel arches to accommodate broader-track axles. Despite these visual similarities, significant mechanical upgrades set the 90 and 110 apart including the introduction of coil springs, adoption of a permanent four-wheel-drive system, integrating a two-speed transfer gearbox with a lockable center differential, a taller, and single-piece windscreen among others. Introduced in 1990, the Land Rover Defender 90 marked a pivotal moment for the brand, emerging after the Land Rover Discovery's debut in 1989. This model aimed to differentiate Land Rover's original robust vehicle from the newer model lineup featuring the rugged, go-anywhere nature of the original 90 with uprated engines and interior appointments. Uncommon in the USA, this Defender 90 features the Rest of World (RoW) 2.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine and a restoration completed in 2021.
