1954 Mercury Monterey Special Custom Convertible
Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Alongside Ford, the Mercury line also received a complete redesign heading into the 1952 model year. Mercurys now sported a taller, square shape with a larger greenhouse, curved windshield, and an entirely new grille and brightwork were employed. The Monterey, which was introduced in 1950 as a body style in the Mercury Eight series, became its own model in 1952 positioned above the Custom nameplate. A convertible and sedan joined the popular hardtop coupe, with all initially being powered by the Ford Flathead V8 producing 125 horsepower. The 1954 model year debuted “the great new heart of the 1954 Mercury” – a brand-new overhead-valve Ford “Y-Block” V8 rated at 161 horsepower featuring a four-barrel Holley carburetor. Mid-1950s Montereys remain a popular choice among collectors for their modest proportions compared to later years, nice period color schemes, and easy everyday drivability.
Jerry Ferguson, a member of the United States Navy and a co-founder of Biomet Inc., a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of musculoskeletal orthopedic implants and products, was known for his entrepreneurial drive and generosity. He was also an enthusiast of all things 1950s, from music to automobiles. Pursuing his love affair with the automobile, in 1984 Ferguson established the Classic Car Centre of Warsaw, Indiana, a company dedicated to the acquisition and restoration of mid-century American Classics. In operation until his return to Biomet in 1993, today Hagerty Marketplace is proud to offer The Ferguson Collection, comprising the long-hidden remaining inventory and personal collection of Jerry Ferguson.
