Unveiled during the 1977 Geneva Motor Show, the "C123" coupes continued a long-standing tradition of sleek sporting coupes for individualists for an added air of exclusivity. Offered with a range of four and six-cylinder gasoline engines, as well as a five-cylinder diesel engine exclusive to the North American market, there was an option to satisfy nearly everyone's desires. Offering the ideal combination of performance from the 280 CE and the efficiency of the 300 CD was the 230 CE, powered by a 2.3-liter "M102" four-cylinder rated at 136 (DIN) horsepower. When paired with the optional four-speed automatic transmission, the 230 CE was ideally suited for relaxed cruising or high-speed Autobahn touring.
